IN THE FORCES
L/Corporal Clifford Porter
Notification has been received by his wife that Lance-Corpl. Clifford Porter, of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, is a prisoner of war in Germany. His home is at 168, Leeds Road.
He was a reservist, and was called up on the outbreak of war. He joined first the 5th Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, but was later transferred to his present regiment and sent to France. He was reported missing in July.
Before the war he was employed as a labourer at the British Dyestuffs, Ltd., Leeds Road. He is a native of Barnsley, but has lived in Huddersfield for the past seven years.
Huddersfield Daily Examiner (14/May/1981):
Empty bottles found
Two empty tablet bottles and a note were discovered at the home of a local man who was found dead in bed on Sunday, a Huddersfield inquest was told yesterday.
Coroner Mr Philip Gill adjourned the inquest into the death of Mr Clifford Porter, aged 75, of 1a France Fold, Honley, so medical evidence could be completed.
Mr Graham Porter, of the same address, said his father had not been well, and had suffered particularly from stomach trouble. He had had the trouble for a number of years since he gave up work as a chemical process worker at ICI.
Mr Porter said it had never been clear what was wrong with his father, whose illness gave him quite a lot of pain. He was being visited by his doctor, who had prescribed painkillers. Mr Porter said his father also had some sleeping tablets.
Last Sunday his father went to bed about 4pm, and when Mrs Porter went upstairs later she was unable to wake him. A doctor was called and Mr Porter was found to be dead.
A note was found indicating that he was suffering pain, and the bottles were also discovered.
Huddersfield Daily Examiner (25/Jun/1981):
Pain brings suicide
A man who died of a drugs overdose left a note to relatives saying he could not go on living because of the pain of a mystery stomach illness, an inquest heard yesterday.
Mr Clifford Porter, aged 75, of France Fold, Honley, had gone to bed at his home in the afternoon and was found dead in bed at teatime.
Pathologist Dr Henry Black said Mr Porter had swallowed a large overdose of drugs.
Mr Philip Gill, the Coroner, recorded a verdict of suicide.
