BOROUGH POLICE COURT
A Motor-car Joke.
Cuthbert Wray (19), window cleaner, 16, Garforth Street, Aspley, and Robert Percival Wood (18), motor driver, West End House, South Street, were charged with stealing a motor-car value £550, the property of George Poppleton.
The police stated that at 10:20 on the night of October 1st Mr. Poppleton left his motor-car in Kirkgate. He returned in about ten minutes and saw it moving, with the two prisoners in the front seat. Wood was at the driving wheel. The engine was running, the gear was in, and the brakes off. Mr. Poppleton caught Wray and held him until the police arrived.
Mr. Poppleton stated that when he saw his car again it was in Cross Church Street.
A police officer said that the boys told him they were only “laking” with the car. Wray said they made it up between them to put the car round the corner of Cross Church
Street just for the joke of the thing. Wood said they had no intention of stealing the car.Parents of both boys gave their sons good characters.
Both boys promised to sign the pledge and keep it for twelve months.
The case was dismissed.
