Huddersfield Daily Examiner (17/Apr/1946):
HUDDERSFIELD BOROUGH COURT
A “LOSING DO”?
As an excuse for their disorderly conduct in Buxton Road late last night, John Kilgallon (20), seaman, 81, Close Hill Lane, Newsome, and John Houlbrook (21), seaman, 23, Water Street, who pleaded guilty, said that they were celebrating the latter’s twenty-first birthday.
It was stated that the two accused were involved in an incident outside the Co-operative dance hall. Both were serving in the Merchant Navy and were due back to report to their ships today. “Apparently they had been having an evening out,” said Supt. Binns (prosecuting).
“It was John’s twenty-first birthday,” said Kilgallon, “and we just had a bit of a celebration.”
Houlbrook: We had come home, and we were having a bit of a celebration, that’s all.
The Bench ordered both men to be imprisoned until the rising of the Court.
Before G. C-H. Willans and Oliver Rodgers, Esqs.
