He was riding his bicycle out of Smithy Place from the direction of Far Banks, Honley, when the collision occurred.
The Holmfirth ambulance was called and Whitehead was removed to the Holme Valley Memorial Hospital suffering from fractured ribs and head injuries. On inquiry there today it was learned that he was “rather poorly.”
The car was driven by Tom Birkhead, of South Lane, Holmfirth.
Huddersfield Examiner (07/Dec/1940) – In the Forces:
HOLMFIRTH OFFICER MISSING
Second-Lieutenant Tom Birkhead
News has been received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Percy Birkhead, of South House, Holmfirth, that their third son, Second-Lieutenant Tom Birkhead, is missing.
Second-Lieutenant Birkhead, who is twenty years of age, was commissioned in February, 1938, and was attached to the 1/7th Battalion Duke of Wellington’s Regiment. Later he was transferred to the 2/7th Battalion, and went out to France with it in April. His parents received their last letter from him at the end of May.
Mr. Birkhead told an “Examiner” reporter that his son was sent to a Brigade Headquarters in France. The last that was heard of him was that he set out leading a patrol of six motor-cyclists to Eu, near Abbeville. Four of the patrol returned to headquarters late that day, but his son and another motor-cyclist had not been heard of since. He added that he would welcome information from anyone who might have seen his son that day, and he would particularly like to get in touch with the four motors cyclists who returned from the patrol. Second-Lieutenant Birkhead was educated at Rishworth School and Worksop College, and then joined his father’s firm at Lee Mills, Scholes.
Mr. and Mrs. Birkhead’s second son, Private Max Birkhead, is also serving with the 2/7th Battalion. He also went to France and was evacuated with the battalion from St. Valery.
