On researching my Shaw family history I noted Lees Mill residents in the 1841 census; a Shaw family are listed at Lees Mill, Golcar – Charlotte(I think?) Shaw – Mill Owner aged 60; Joseph 6; Nancy 10; Michael 15; Eli 25 clothier; Ann 20; Michael? 2; Susanna Taylor. Another household at Lees Mill has John Cock 55 Clothier; Joseph…(possibly Josephine as the age is entered in the female side?) Cock 35; Then the next entry at Lees the residents are; John Cock 60 clothier; Alice Cock 55. There are no relationships noted in the 1841 census.
I am related to an Eli Shaw (ggggrandfather) I am not sure if this is the same Eli Shaw as mine but it is possible although he appears to be slightly younger than mine. Nevertheless the Lees Mill, Golcar residents in 1841 were as above.
Just in case anyone knows; my Eli Shaw (b. abt 1811?) was married to Mary Marshall in Almondbury in 1852 aged 41 and his father was Joseph Shaw “a manufacturer”. I cannot work out his family before 1850 I thought Eli Shaw would be a rare name but no there are about a dozen in and around Huddersfield – my Eli Shaw lived in Lockwood and worked as a stonemason in 1850. Thanks to Huddersfield Exposed! I have found a couple of references to him in the 1850 directory for instance he is listed as mason and builder.
Eli had been previously married as he was a widower, his second wife (also widowed) was originally Mary Mitchell Thomas of Fixby, she had been married to a John Marshall of Rastrick.
