Acre House was the home in the 1830s to the 1860s of James Broadbent a woolen manufacturer and gentlemen farmer and his wife Jane (nee Booth). Here together they raised a their family of eight girls. James Broadbent was the youngest son of John Broadbent master manufacturer of Longwood Edge who became prominent in the local Wesleyan church. His nephew Sir William Henry Broadbent was the personal physician of H M Queen Victoria.
