Ann:
I’ve just been looking at this map of Lockwood. I had my 9th birthday at the White Lion which is where the Lockwood is now. I was only aware it had changed it’s name. This was in 1963. On the map it shows the White Lion across the road?

Hi Ann! Many thanks for leaving a comment. It looks like the White Lion was originally on the other side of the road from the Lockwood. The 1890 O.S. town plan seems to show it as being a narrow road corner, so likely the first White Lion was demolished to allow the road to be widened (which would definitely be a requirement for laying a tram line). By the 1906 O.S. map, the first White Lion is no longer marked as a “P.H.” but the Lockwood is.
