AN ARMY OFFICER’S CRASH
Motor-cycle that Struck Base of Bollard
Accidental death was the verdict recorded by the Borough Coroner (Mr. E. W. Norris) on Wednesday on Second-Lieut. James Joseph Butterly (40), of the Royal Corps of Signals, who died from cerebral laceration due to fracture of the base of the skull, an injury he sustained when thrown from a motor-cycle at the junction of Wakefield Road and Ravensknowle Road on Friday afternoon last week.
Second-Lieut. Butterly, whose home was at 10, Shilling Hill, Alloa, was married and had two children. In civil life he was manager of a radio and electrical depot. He had occasion to go to Huddersfield on Army business and used an Army motor-cycle. He was accustomed to motor-cycles.
Three witnesses described how the accident happened. Barbara Hill, 22, Corby Street, Birkby, a nurse at Storthes Hall Mental Hospital, who was cycling towards Huddersfield at the time, said that as the motor-cyclist was passing the second bollard near the bottom of Ravensknowle Road he turned sharply to his left. the machine skidded, and he was thrown. She said that the machine did not come in contact with the bollard. Joseph Thomas Clarkson, 14 Mitchell Avenue, Waterloo, also also spoke of the machine skidding, and said he did not think that it touched the bollard, or its base; but another eyewitness. William Best, of Spa Terrace, Lepton, said that the motor-cyclist touched the stone surround of the bollard either with his boot or his foot-rest, and that he then lost his balance and was “thrown clean over the handlebars at a tremendous speed.”
When P.-C. Ineson told how the front wheel of the cycle was slightly buckled and how he found some white paint marks on the tyre, the Coroner remarked that that was pretty conclusive and found that the accident was caused by the machine coming into contact with the bollard.
