Huddersfield Examiner (09/Nov/1940):
PADDOCK SAILOR WHO WENT TO DAKAR
Able-Seaman J. D. Baxter, who took part in the Dakar expedition, photographed at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Baxter, West View, Paddock, where he has been spending a few days’ leave. With him is Chuna the Chow. Able-Seaman Baxter, who is twenty years old, was born in Huddersfield and attended Paddock Council School. He joined the Navy about four years ago and since the outbreak of war he has had a number of exciting adventures, in addition to those of the Dakar affair. He was serving in H.M.S. Renown when she was in action with the Scharnhorst and the Hipper off the coast of Norway, and he was in the evacuation of Dunkirk. He has also been in ships that have been attacked by enemy aircraft. But he looks upon his experiences as being “all in the day’s job,” and is loath to talk about them.
