Meltham Soldier Dies of Wounds
News has been received of the death from wounds while a prisoner of war in Germany of Private Herbert Strickland of the 2nd Seaforth Highlanders. Pte. Strickland, who was thirty-one years of age, joined the Forces in 1930, and had served his term about twelve months before the beginning of the present war. On coming out of the Army he was employed as a postman in Huddersfield, and later as a prison warder in Wakefield Gaol. He found the Army more to his liking than civilian life, and rejoined in the summer of 1939. He was with the British Expeditionary Force in France, and it was during the evacuation from Dunkirk that he was reported missing. Nothing further was heard of his whereabouts until a German doctor sent a message through the Red Cross that he had died of wounds. Before he was married his home address was No. 12, Broadlands, but on marriage he lived for a short while in Maltby. He was a keen footballer, and at one time played Rugby with the Meltham Rugby Club; later he turned to the Association game and played with a Meltham club in the Red Triangle League. His three brothers are serving with the Forces.
