SHELLEY MAN GETS COMMISSION

Lieutenant in Indian Army

News has been received by cable from Rawalpindi, India, that Sergeant Ronald Ivor Barden has been gazetted Lieutenant of the Indian Army. Sergeant Barden, a native of Shelley, enlisted in the Territorial Army (5th Batt. Duke of Wellington’s Regiment) at the age of seventeen, and twelve months later joined the Regular Army in the East Yorkshire Regiment. In January, 1936, he sailed for India, where he spent two and a half years on the North West Frontier. He became Lance-Sergt., and held the rank for only eleven days before being promoted to Sergeant in July, 1939. Three months later he was recommended for a commission. Before joining the Army Lieutenant Barden was employed by Messrs. Firth Bros., Ltd., Shepley. All his friends and former workmates are gratified by his promotion.

BARDEN. – Major Ronald Ivor Barden, of 226, Telfer Road, beloved husband of Lorna Evelyn, dear father of Dennis Ronald and Ian Ivor and loving Granddad of Stuart James, passed away suddenly at home on January 24. Funeral  service at St. Francis’ Church, Radford, on Thursday, January 27, at 11.15 a.m., followed by interment. Flowers to the Co-operative Funeral Service, Lower Holyhead Road.
