NEWS OF MEN IN THE FORCES
UNDERBANK BAKER
Notification has been received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. Dawson, of Underbank, Holmfirth that their son, Pte. Norman Dawson is missing. Pte. Dawson was serving with the No. 2 Field Bakery in France, and a letter has been received from his commanding officer stating that he did not return with them and therefore he must be presumed missing. It was hoped, however, that further news would be received of him.
Pte. Dawson joined up in March this year and went to France a month later. His last letter was received by his parents in June. He was formerly connected with the Holmfirth Parish Church Young Men’s Club. Before he went to France he became engaged to Miss Doreen Cartwright, of Shelley. He was employed by his father as a baker.

Holmfirth Man’s Body Washed Up on French Coast
Notification has been received by Mr. and Mrs. F. Dawson, of Underbank Holmfirth, that their son, Pte. Norman Dawson, who was reported missing in July, was drowned when the liner Lancastria, which was evacuating soldiers from Saint-Nazaire in June, was bombed and sunk. It is understood that his body was washed up on the French coast about a fortnight after the sinking. Pte Dawson was serving with the No. 2 Field Bakery in France. He joined up in March this year and went to France in April. He was formerly connected with the Holmfirth Parish Church Young Men’s Club. Before he went to France he became engaged to Miss Doreen Cartwright, of Shelley. He was employed by his father as a baker.
