I moved to Hill in 1984. The house is built on the site of a much older building for which I have the old deeds and an aerial photograph from the 1970’s which shows a quite substantial farm building. My neighbour has lived on Hill all his life and he and the other original families appear to have parcelled the land informally between themselves over the years. He told me that at one time, if you lived on Hill it was like saying you lived on Skid Row! Another chap told me that there is a well under what is now my patio. There is also a communal well, apparently, down the driveway and behind the old house over the lane to me. There is a ghost of a chap that we see who used to live in the old cottages further up Hill. I believe Hill to be on an old packhorse route over the Pennines. However I would love to hear more of the history of this ancient hamlet.
