Thank you for all this interesting information. Joe’s son Mendelssohn was my great grandma’s father and both Mendelssohn and William Wood Perkin served time in prison for drunk and disorderly (M) and debt (x3 W.) My grandma, Marion Battye, was Everelda Perkin’s daughter and Mary Elaine Tilburn, my mum, was Marion’s daughter! I seem to recall that Mendelssohn died in Deanhouse Workhouse? Thank you.

Joe Perkin was my Great Great Grandad. Martha Perkin was married to my Grandad Fred Batty of Scissett. My cousin had the original score of Pratty Flowers and made a copy of the family tree which I have.

I am sorry I am not sure who has the score now my cousin has died but will make enquiries. Another relative Fran Broadbent has done a lot of research and actually found our Great Great Great Grandads grave in Holmfirth. She has recently found out that my Grandad Fred’s younger brother was sent to prison at Wakefield for stealing 3 fowl !

Gosh, we do have a famous family! Is the grave in the Methodist church yard do you know? It would be interesting to have a look when we’re over that way. Nowadays we wouldn’t even be charged for stealing a few chickens, times change. Thanks for this info Gillian, going to add notes to their names in their folders.

Hi Patricia, Fran here. Joseph and family are buried in the cemetery in Holmfirth. If you want to see where it is I could meet you and show you but there isn’t a lot to see – there was a landslide that has just about covered the head stone.

Hello again Fran. Thanks for your reply. As you say, their grave won’t be much to see, so I won’t make a special trip from Filey to see it. I do appreciate your info though.

Joe Perkin is my 3 times great Grandfather, he was my grandma’s great grandfather.
we have worked out that we are the children descended from William Wood and his wife Hannah Bailey. They had 8 children.
Mendhelson had 2 children everelda and a little boy, but his wife passed during childbirth.
Would love to know more. My son graduates at Carlisle cathedral soon which is ironic as that is where Joe perkin also sang!
.if anyone else know more about William Wood Perkin and Hannah Bailey and their 8 children I’d love to hear which one if their children was my grandmothers parent.
Hello Patricialynn and anonymous users. Joe Perkin senior was my Grandma’s Grandfather. We believe her father was William Wood Perkin. My Grandma died before I was born. Her name was Ellen (Nelly) Parkin. She had a sister named Laura. My great aunt Laura would stand up and sing Pratty Flowers every Christmas. I would love to know more about my Grandma’s family.
