I live near Lowell, Massachusetts, USA, where John and Elizabeth Annie Townend Powell were partners in a photography studio. It is only the last few months I have discovered they took some extraordinary photos of local textile mill workers around 1912, including one of Elizabeth’s niece, Annie Wood (born 1896). Annie migrated with her parents, Thomas and Clara Townend Wood, two aunts and siblings, fromĀ Meltham to Lowell in 1904. Annie was working in the mills by age 13. The photo link above is part of an important collection at the University of Lowell, whose origins were somewhat mysterious.
