Has anyone pictures or information of Dog Hall that was situated on the Meltham road by the cemetary
I’ve never come across an explanation as to the placename, but I can’t find any evidence to suggest it was a proper hall as such. The buildings shown on the first O.S. map below (late 1840s) appear to have survived until at least the 1960s and were 13 properties (inc. some back-to-backs) arranged in an inverted “U” shape with a covered/arched entrance on the northern side. The 1861 Census has mostly working class people living in the properties. The area marked as “Dungeon Wood Bottom” on the map was also known as “Lower Dog Hall”, which suggests Dog Hall was the name given to the general area.
One possibility is that it was similar to Dog Kennel Bank (Almondbury) and it was a place where hunting dogs were once kept, perhaps by the Beaumonts of Whitley Hall who owned much of the land.
I’ve just spotted that the Survey of English Place-Names gives a 15th century spelling as “Doggerodes”, which could mean “an enclosed clearing for dogs”.
